A Trusted Learning and Development Advisor
Managing Upwards Training Course was designed by an organisational psychologist. Most people don’t like pushing more work up the hierarchy, but sometimes it’s necessary to manage tasks upwards. Usually it’s a knowledge or skills gap. Thankfully, both of those gaps can usually be fixed, so that means you won’t need to manage the same task upwards again.
Malcolm Gladwell showcases an example of managing upwards in his observation of cockpit culture. He observed an airline in Korea having crashes as a result of cultural norms. These tended to dictate that the co-pilots avoided directly questioning the pilot flying the plane. Planes were crashing by pilot error, and the co-pilot was too polite to point out the error to the pilot literally moments before the crash.
Managing Upwards can be a difficult skill to learn, and practice makes it perfect. There is a proven methodology to follow and discover how to work seamlessly with people you report to. The objective of managing upwards is to get the task/job done by someone else. If practised properly, managing upwards can help save time and costs for any organisation. People often fail to delegate tasks upwards due to reasons such as fear of losing control or lack of confidence in other people.
In this managing upwards in-house training course, participants will learn that a one size fits all style will not work. Managing upwards needs flexibility, creativeness and an understanding of human psychology.
