Milkshake Duck

The Macquarie dictionary people  have an annual get together to decide which new words will be included in the dictionary. “Milkshake duck” has just been approved. Unfortunately for the avid scrabble fan it’s got a space in between so it won’t make the scrabble dictionary. A “milkshake duck” is a person who is pulled from obscurity for doing something good. Alas when all the attention flows onto the do-gooder, it then emerges that he’s actually a miscreant. “

I’ve been making up words for years but I haven’t made Macquarie Dictionary as yet. 

Here’s a few of my pets: 

“Nobot” - A person in the organisation who behaves like a robot and says “no” to every request. These people are wired to say “no”. It’s a waste of time trying to get a “yes” out of these people so find another route.

“Credidiot” - A person who uses credit cards willy nilly and who stockpiles credit card debt. Credidiots think that credit is cool and are lured by c/c points, greed and card status.

Middler – A middler is someone who is always in the middle of something. At work you’ll ask a colleague for help who will tell you that they are in the middle of something else. A middler never seems to start or end a project but hides away in the middle of projects for time immemorial. Ghettos in Organisations

Think of a ghetto in a movie you’ve watched. It’s usually dark and scary. Even the police steer clear of some ghettos. We were working with an organisation that had a very toxic department. Everyone lived in fear of the department. Addressing the problem was in the too hard basket. Funnily enough this wasn’t a critical department but it slowed down all operations nonetheless. 

Maybe one day E=MC Squared will be proven wrong, but the following equation will stand the test of time. “Poor Workplace Behaviour Continues Expanding at a rate that it’s allowed until it’s Addressed”. (PWB<x%^A) If you’re not mathematical minded then you won’t have noticed that I concocted the equation. But I do firmly believe that if poor workplace behaviour is not addressed then it won’t be fixed. 

So if you feel nice and comfortable walking through every part of your organisation, then that’s a good sign. But if there is a place or department  in your organisation that gives your tummy butterflies then maybe you’re in a ghetto within your organisation. Rest assured that today’s problems will only get worse tomorrow. With the new year here’s a course to tear down organisational ghettos.
